Scott's Fort Peck Fishing Report
The summer of 2008 was another great year of walleye fishing on Ft Peck. We had to change our fishing tactics with the higher water levels, but it is nice to see the lake getting closer to the high water mark.
We caught 21 walleye 10 pounds or better and 38 over 6 pounds. Only went out for the lakers and salmon a couple days -- the lake trout bite was good, but we only got the one big salmon. We did catch a couple small salmon while fishing for walleye. The average smallmouth bass seem to be getting bigger as do the northern pike.
A couple weeks ago we watched the F&G plant a bunch of salmon that looked to be about 6-7". They released them at the marina and the next day we were fishing in Duck Creek and caught about a three-pound smallmouth bass and it coughed up one of those little salmon. Maybe the reason we haven't had much of a salmon run the last several years is because the other predators are doing so well. If that is the reason, I guess it's not all bad.
According to the scribbles in my calendar, we averaged 4.6 walleyes over 16" a day, and if I could guarantee the same success rates on the trophy walleye as we had this summer, there would be a 50% chance of the boat landing a walleye in the double digits each day out.
Well I have one more trip on the water and then it is time to start the pre hunting work. Keep an eye on our site, I hope to get some more game cam pictures up soon.
PS. Got some scouting in while fishing the other day with Carl Mann. We watched a 5x5 bull elk swim across the lake. We first noticed him out in the middle of the lake between the camel humps and York island, he swam into the bay near the Duck Creek boat ramp. Near as I can tell , he must have came from Haxby point, if so it was a 6 1/2 mile swim, he was pretty wobbly when he reached the shore, but after a couple minutes he trotted off over the hill, what a site.............and guess what.....two outfitters in the boat and no camera !
