Winter coyote hunts

Coyote hunting is a great way to spend time in the field.

My brother and head guide Jeff along with our coyote tournament partner Mike Cotter and I do a lot of calling in the winter months here in eastern Montana. Our success at it has been good and we get a lot of the area ranchers calling us to hunt them on their ranches.

So we have thousands of prime coyote hunting acres to call. On a good day, 50 percent of our calling sets produce one or more coyotes coming to the call.

We typically make our sets near where the ranchers are feeding cows or in the breaks of the Missouri river. Some times we will call in the wide open farm country also.

Old Wiley Coyote can be found just about anywhere at any time. Montana is great coyote country.

A bit about our gear......

We each have our favorite caliber for coyotes. I shoot a .22-250. Jeff prefers the .243. And Mike is in the new era with a .223 short mag. But as with all hunting, the best gun is the one your most comfortable with. We like the smaller calibers and hand-loaded ammo for solid kills with minimal pelt damage. But on the windy days, I will sometimes opt for my heavy barrel Remington 700 in .308.

We use both hand calls and electronic calls. We prefer the hand calls in most situations but the electronic ones definitely have a time and place.

Shooting sticks, binoculars and a range finder are good to have for those days when the coyotes just don't want to close the gap from easy-in-your-face shots to 300 or 500-yard shots.

A padded seat keeps your backside dry and warm and heat packs come in handy also. I like to have a feather hanging from a string tied to the end of my barrel. On real windy days, it reminds me to play the wind on the longer shots and on the not-so-obvious days it lets me know when I had better take the shot before the coyote winds me. It also tells me the direction 90 percent of the coyotes will come from.

So if you have cabin fever give us a call and we'll turn it into coyote fever.

Just give us a call at (406) 798-3474 or e-mail us at sund@midrivers.com and we'll be happy to tell you more about it.
